Following the accident, a second crew member decided to leave the simulation due to safety concerns. Because the mission required a minimum number of participants to remain viable, the loss of two members made it impossible to continue the study, leading to the immediate cancellation of the eight-month simulation.
Technical Failure and Mission Termination
The incident occurred during the critical early phase of the mission, where the crew was establishing power and operational systems. The severity of the electric shock not only endangered the physical health of the injured scientist but also compromised the psychological stability and perceived safety of the remaining team. Unlike previous missions, where the crew size was larger, this expedition began with only four members, leaving no margin for personnel loss.
The Hi-SEAS Habitat and Martian Simulation
The Hi-SEAS facility is located on the rocky slopes of Mauna Loa in Hawaii. This location was selected because its remote and desolate volcanic terrain closely resembles the surface of Mars.
